Why?
I began having symptoms years ago, dry eyes, headaches, as I began to use my new iPhone. That began my pseudo obsession with figuring out what caused it. As I dove into the world of PWM and researching which devices I could actually use I became frustrated with the lack of data out there. Notebookcheck and DXO would only test devices at one level, and it was mostly just a footnote in their overall review. I decided to take matters in my own hands and bought a testing device and started a site in the hopes that I can give better information out there on devices testing at multiple levels of brightness as well as figuring out how the displays are actually working to manage brightness levels. I hope that you find this helpful and if you would like to support me in obtaining more devices please consider a donation (link below).
Flicker Chart
Below is my first take on a fair rating system. I took the modulation and flicker rate (hz) of each device over all three brightness stages and averaged them. If the device had a "flicker reduction" setting I used that for the averages.
The farther up and to the right, the better the phone will be on your eyes. If you are more sensitive to flicker rate (hz) pick a phone that is higher up on the scale. If you are sensitive to modulation (%) then pick a device that is farthest right on the scale. I plan to keep developing this and am open to ideas, especially if there are any data scientists out there that would like to help. Any of the devices in green would be ideal for those with sensitive eyes.
