This will always be one of my favorite phone companies. Great camera? Check. Film in 8k (way before Apple and Samsung)? Check. Oh you need extra storage? SD card support - check. Headphone jack? Double check (quad DAC included). Durability? double check. 5g capabilities? Check. Flickering screen???? uh-oh...
Right off the bat we can see we are going to have issues with this device. At 75% brightness we have both really low flicker rate of 246 herts along with really high modulation of 99.5%. Put them together and you get hurt-my-eyes stew.
As we dim the screen to 50% brightness we don't get any relief. The flicker rate remains the same at 246 hertz and the modulation also remains the same around 99.5%. One interesting thing of note is to see how much bigger the time off is on this lower brightness. You can see the gap increase quite a bit from what it was at 75%. This is not good.
At 25% brightness we may as well be looking at a strobe light. The frequency remains low at 246 hertz and the modulation also remains low at 99.5%, with even larger gaps at zero lux. As bad as the screen is for the eyes I do have to say this was one of my most favorite devices ever. I wish that companies would come back to this form - including features instead of taking them away. The Sony Xperia line may be the last holdout for including the sd card and headphone jack, and unfortunately they are exiting the USA market in 2024 by not releasing their Sony Xperia 1 VI in the United States. This does not spell good things for the future of smartphones.
